Time dilation, part of the theory of relativity, truly spooks me. As good ol’ Wikipedia describes it, “time dilation is an observed difference of elapsed time between two events as measured by observers either moving relative to each other or differently situated from gravitational masses.” From a space travel perspective, it means that time will pass more slowly for an astronaut the closer they get to the speed of light, compared to a person who is planetbound and therefore more stationary. Time will SEEM to pass normally from the viewpoint of each person, but the astronaut could return home to find that generations have passed. Creepy stuff, and it’s even been demonstrated using atomic clocks on airplanes (compared to clocks back on the ground). Also, Queen wrote an awesome song about it called “’39.”
