Back in the Black Part 70
See? Valkyrie’s moved up to stealing GOLDEN hot dogs. Progress!
This is the last part of “Back in the Black,” which I began way too long ago. The plot threads introduced will, of course, continue to play out in future stories.

It’s been fun watching this chapter of the Blacktron Civil War unfold.
I wish I’d obtained more of the original Blacktron sets when I was a kid. Around 1988, I was obsessed with Futuron because of the many different spaceman colors and transparent blue ship canopies, and completely ignored Blacktron. Renegade, Invader, and Battrax have a unique stealthy, aggressive style that’s missing from the high-tech Blacktron II sets. To this day, I don’t think LEGO has created a more impressive space base than the Message Intercept Base, although the Space Police III Central is very close.
Thanks, Karsin! It’s been brewing for awhile. When I was a kid, I had one Blacktron I set – the Invader, of course – and I cherished it. I still have it in the box and used it early on in the comic, but I’ve since obtained another one I use for shooting. I also was obsessed was Futuron, more so than Classic Space. One of my best LEGO-related memories was when a friend’s Mom bought both me and him the Futuron minifigure pack. I don’t believe I had any of the other sets, though. I mostly had hand-me-down Classic Space and Town bricks. Agreed that Blacktron I has a sleek charm that has never been matched. And it’s simple by its nature, but effective. I enjoyed Space Police III Central but did eventually sell it. In more recent years, I did acquire a Message Intercept Base for a good deal. I imagine you might see it here at some point… 🙂
Super cool that you have a Message Intercept Base available for future stories.
The Futuron minifigure pack was great! Red and black Futuron astronauts were somewhat uncommon in regular sets. Other than the minifig pack, there was only 1 set with red and 2 sets with black Futuron guys, out of the 19 sets in the whole series. I remember having a bunch of yellow and blue Futuron astronauts, and being super excited at finally acquiring the red and black Futurons when I received the minifigure pack as a birthday gift.
That’s right! Some of the Futuron figures were more rare and I felt fortunate to have a set. And I’ve got plans for the Message Intercept Base….
