Early in my journalism career, I made a callous mistake not far removed from Connor McNewsbreaker’s self-centeredness above. The river coursing through our local towns flooded and I was sent out to interview residents who had suffered damage. One guy’s prized classic sports car had ended up in a tree, which made for our obvious front page photo. I completely lost my empathy in the moment and enthused about what a wonderful picture it would make. The guy’s girlfriend acidly retorted, “I’m very happy for you,” and the car owner himself politely brushed it off, but I still feel like an ass to this day. The photo did end up on the front page, though. And I won a journalism award for the coverage!
